Veneers Q&A

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are a wonderfully versatile cosmetic dentistry treatment that provides an opportunity to create a beautiful smile in just a few visits. When you admire the seemingly perfect smile of a celebrity or public figure, it’s often a great set of veneers you notice.

Thanks to innovations in dental technology, veneers are no longer only an option for the rich and famous. Many people can now improve their smile through dental veneers, which are made of thin layers of top quality porcelain. They fit directly over the surface of your natural teeth to transform the appearance of your smile.

Veneers are usually only applied to the teeth most visible when you speak or smile. For most people, this includes the front upper teeth, although you can also have veneers placed on your lower teeth as needed.

What kinds of issues can dental veneers correct?

Dental veneers have the power to address numerous cosmetic issues. Some of the areas where veneers can create marked improvement include:

  • Discoloration not treatable through teeth whitening
  • Gapped teeth
  • Minor misalignment
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Abnormally small teeth
  • Chipped or cracked teeth

The ability to correct numerous issues with the same treatment is part of what makes dental veneers so popular.

What is the process for getting dental veneers?

During your consultation, iTero® intraoral scanning gathers information about the exact size, shape, and alignment of your teeth. This plays a central role in designing your veneers.

If you decide to move forward with veneers, your next visit begins with an injection of local anesthetic to eliminate sensation in the treatment area. Your dentist removes a small portion of natural tooth tissue to make room for the veneers.

A set of impressions give the dental lab the information needed to craft a set of custom dental veneers. Temporary veneers protect your teeth until your new veneers arrive from the lab.

You then return to have your dentist check your veneers for fit and appearance. If you’re both pleased, the dentist then cements your veneers in place, completing the treatment. You walk out with your new smile ready to share.

Desert Dental also offers Lumineers®, a type of no-prep veneers that attach to your natural teeth without having to remove tooth tissue. Be sure to ask for more information during your visit, which you can book online or by phone today.
